Ruth Blau
My goal as a weaver and fiber artist is to create distinctive
cloth that cannot easily be produced commercially. To that
end, I often dye my warps (threads that are stretched on the
loom) so that colors blend from one into the next. Recently,
I have been experimenting with a special technique for dyeing
weft yarns (the fibers that are wound onto the shuttle and
that weave the pattern as they interlace with the warp) that
allows weft colors to blend from one to the next. The effect
is similar to, yet also different from, the effect achieved
by dyeing warp threads.
I like to create garments and accessories that are as functional
as they are beautiful: warm shawls, jackets that go from office
to evening events, etc. I also weave one-of-a-kind table linens,
make kumihimo jewelry, and create pieced and rag-woven carryalls,
purses, and evening bags.
