Cindy Grisdela
Artist Statement
I'm intrigued by color and the way colors interact with one
another. When I was a child, one of my favorite pastimes was
taking a new box of crayons and exploring how the colors worked
together. In a way, I'm continuing those explorations in fabric.
I like to use fabric the way a painter might use paint to
create a mood, develop a contrast, or sometimes just to see
what happens.
My work has a feeling of spontaneity because I use many different
fabrics in my designs, along with improvisational cutting
and piecing techniques and whimsical free motion quilting.
Fiber art is exciting to me because it offers a tactile quality
beyond the color and line of a design. Once I've played with
the colors and the fabric in the pieced top, I have another
opportunity to add dimension to my work by quilting the layers
together-a process I like to think of as drawing with a needle
and thread. Most of my work is abstract in nature and heavily
machine quilted with variegated thread to give an added sparkle.
