Joyce Keister
My fascination with weaving stems from an early interest
in textiles. I always wanted fabric that couldn’t be found
in stores, and clothing different from ready-made.
Working with natural fibers – wool, mohair, silk, cotton
and rayon – I use only top quality materials. I start with
white yarn and wind it into warp chains, then paint dyes on
the yarn before warping my loom. Buttons are chosen to complement
each piece, often natural polished rocks.
A computerized loom and weaving software has made the greatest
impact on my work, giving me much more freedom to design the
fabric.
Each piece is unique. I do all the dyeing, weaving, and garment
construction myself, resulting in a garment that will last
many years.
My work has been exhibited in many juried shows and won numerous
awards. It can be seen year-round at the Potomac Fiber Arts
Gallery in the Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria Virginia.
